Number talks are a powerful teaching tool that can help students develop their number sense and problem-solving skills. Number talks are short, focused discussions about mathematical problems that are typically presented orally. Students are encouraged to share their thinking and strategies, and to listen to and learn from each other.

Number talks can be used to address a variety of mathematical topics, including place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. They can also be used to develop students' problem-solving skills and their ability to communicate their mathematical thinking.

Number talks are a great way to start math class each day. They help students to warm up their mathematical minds and to get them thinking about mathematics in a positive way. Number talks can also be used as an assessment tool to help teachers identify students who are struggling with particular concepts.

If you are interested in implementing number talks in your classroom, here are a few tips:

  1. Start with simple problems. The goal of number talks is to get students thinking about mathematics, not to overwhelm them. Start with problems that are easy for students to solve, and then gradually increase the difficulty as they become more comfortable.
  2. Encourage student participation. Number talks are most effective when students are actively participating. Encourage students to share their thinking and strategies, and to listen to and learn from each other.
  3. Be patient. It takes time for students to develop their number sense and problem-solving skills. Be patient and provide plenty of opportunities for students to practice.

To help you get started, here are some ready-to-use number talks for grades 6-8:

Number Talks for Sixth Grade

  • What is 123 + 456?
  • What is 987 - 654?
  • What is 12 x 13?
  • What is 45 ÷ 9?
  • What is 1/2 of 12?

Number Talks for Seventh Grade

  • What is 1,234 + 5,678?
  • What is 9,876 - 4,567?
  • What is 123 x 456?
  • What is 567 ÷ 89?
  • What is 2/3 of 15?

Number Talks for Eighth Grade

  • What is 12,345 + 6,789?
  • What is 9,876 - 5,432?
  • What is 123 x 456 x 789?
  • What is 678 ÷ 9?
  • What is 3/4 of 20?

These are just a few examples of number talks that you can use in your classroom. There are many other possibilities, and you can adapt them to fit the needs of your students.

Number talks are a valuable teaching tool that can help students develop their number sense and problem-solving skills. If you are not already using them in your classroom, I encourage you to give them a try. You may be surprised at how much your students learn and grow.
