Bessie Coleman was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 26, 1892. She was the tenth of thirteen children born to George and Susan Coleman. Her father was a sharecropper and her mother was a washerwoman. Bessie's family was poor, but they were determined to give their children a good education.

Bessie attended school in Atlanta and graduated from high school in 1910. She then attended Tuskegee Institute, where she studied nursing. After graduating from Tuskegee, Bessie worked as a nurse in Chicago. However, she soon realized that her true passion was flying.

In 1921, Bessie traveled to France to attend flight school. She was the first black woman to earn a pilot's license in France. After returning to the United States, Bessie became a barnstorming pilot. She performed stunts at air shows and gave lectures about the importance of aviation.

In 1923, Bessie Coleman became the first black woman to fly across the United States. She flew from Chicago to New York City in a single-engine plane. Her flight was a major accomplishment and it helped to break down racial barriers in aviation.

Bessie Coleman continued to fly until her untimely death in 1926. She was only 34 years old when she died in a plane crash. However, her legacy continues to inspire people today. Bessie Coleman was a pioneer in aviation and she paved the way for other black women to follow in her footsteps.
