Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He is considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Stravinsky's music is characterized by its rhythmic complexity, harmonic dissonance, and use of innovative orchestral techniques. He is best known for his ballets, such as The Firebird (1910),Petrushka (1911),and The Rite of Spring (1913).

Early Life and Education in Russia

Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, Russia, on June 17, 1882. His father was a bass-baritone in the Mariinsky Opera, and his mother was a talented pianist. Stravinsky's early works were influenced by Russian folk music and the music of Rimsky-Korsakov. His first major work, the Symphony in E♭ (1907),was a success, and it established Stravinsky as a rising star in the Russian music world.

Move to France and the Ballets Russes

In 1910, Stravinsky moved to France, where he became involved with the Ballets Russes, a ballet company founded by Sergei Diaghilev. Stravinsky wrote three ballets for the Ballets Russes: The Firebird (1910),Petrushka (1911),and The Rite of Spring (1913). These ballets were groundbreaking works, and they helped to establish Stravinsky as one of the most important composers of the 20th century.

The Firebird is a fairy tale ballet based on Russian folklore. The music is lush and evocative, and it features some of Stravinsky's most beautiful melodies. Petrushka is a ballet about a puppet who comes to life. The music is lively and humorous, and it captures the spirit of the Russian folk theater. The Rite of Spring is a ballet about a pagan ritual sacrifice. The music is complex and dissonant, and it reflects the primitive and violent nature of the ritual.

Later Years in the United States

In 1934, Stravinsky moved to the United States, where he lived for the rest of his life. He continued to compose music, and he also taught at Harvard University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Stravinsky's later works were more eclectic than his early works, and they incorporated elements of jazz, serialism, and other musical styles.

Stravinsky died in New York City on April 6, 1971. He is considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. His music is still performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
