Fort Donelson
Forrest's first major battle was the Battle of Fort Donelson in February 1861. Fort Donelson was a Confederate stronghold on the Cumberland River in Tennessee. Forrest was placed in command of a cavalry brigade and ordered to defend the fort. The Union Army under Ulysses S. Grant attacked the fort on February 13th.
