Plot

Intended Consequences begins with the murder of a young woman named Sarah Sunhill. Rusty Sabich, a wealthy businessman, is arrested for the murder. Sabich's wife, Lissa, hires Malcolm Bannister to defend her husband. Bannister is initially reluctant to take the case, but he is persuaded by Lissa, who believes that her husband is innocent.

As Bannister investigates the case, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit. He learns that Sabich has been involved in numerous illegal activities, including money laundering and drug trafficking. Bannister is torn between his duty to his client and his own moral compass. He knows that if he defends Sabich, he will be helping a guilty man escape justice. But if he does not defend Sabich, he will be violating his oath as a lawyer.

The trial is a tense and suspenseful affair. The prosecution presents a strong case against Sabich, but Bannister is able to poke holes in the prosecution's case. The jury eventually finds Sabich not guilty, but Bannister is not convinced that Sabich is innocent.

In the aftermath of the trial, Bannister is haunted by the case. He knows that Sabich is guilty, but he was unable to prove it in court. Bannister is left to wonder if he made the right decision in defending Sabich.

Themes

Intended Consequences explores several themes, including the ethical dilemmas faced by lawyers, the consequences of one's actions, and the nature of justice.

The ethical dilemmas faced by lawyers: Lawyers are often faced with ethical dilemmas, such as whether to defend a client they know is guilty. In Intended Consequences, Bannister is faced with this dilemma when he is asked to defend Rusty Sabich. Bannister knows that Sabich is guilty, but he is also aware that Sabich has a right to a fair trial. Bannister must weigh his duty to his client against his own moral compass.

The consequences of one's actions: Intended Consequences also explores the consequences of one's actions. Bannister's decision to defend Rusty Sabich has a profound impact on his life. Bannister is haunted by the case long after the trial is over. He knows that he helped a guilty man escape justice, and he is left to wonder if he made the right decision.

The nature of justice: Intended Consequences also raises questions about the nature of justice. Is justice served when a guilty person escapes punishment? Or is justice served when the innocent are protected? Intended Consequences does not provide easy answers to these questions, but it forces the reader to think about the complex nature of justice.

Critical Reception

Intended Consequences received generally positive reviews from critics. The New York Times praised the novel's "gripping plot" and "well-developed characters." The Washington Post called the novel "a thought-provoking and suspenseful legal thriller."

Intended Consequences was also a commercial success. The novel spent several weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into more than 30 languages.
